This summary helps you find your way. The full text below is what applies.
1. Documented with care
Uganda Culture documents Uganda's cultures with the communities who hold them. Every record cites its sources, credits the people who shared it and shows when it was last checked. Editors review everything, a separate person approves it, and an editor publishes it.
Even so, cultural knowledge is large, living and always changing. Our records may be incomplete, may contain mistakes, or may describe a practice as it was at one time and in one place. Information can change after we last checked it. Please treat what you read as a careful starting point, not the final word.
Each record shows its sources and the date it was last checked. Before you rely on a record for something important, look at those sources and that date, and where you can, ask the community, clan, kingdom or cultural institution concerned. Uganda Culture does not speak for any community or cultural institution.
2. Accounts differ
The same tradition, name, totem, story or ceremony is often described differently by different clans, regions and families. Where we know of different accounts, we try to show them and say where each comes from. A record that gives one account does not mean that other accounts are wrong.
Some cultural knowledge is sensitive, and some is restricted and never published. A record may therefore leave things out on purpose, out of respect for the community concerned.
3. Not professional advice
Our content is for learning about culture. It is not professional advice, and you should not rely on it as such.
- Health and traditional medicine: records about herbs, remedies or healing practices describe culture. They are not medical advice. Speak to a qualified health worker before using any remedy.
- Legal matters: records about land, inheritance, marriage, clan or kingdom customs are not legal advice. Speak to a qualified lawyer about your own situation.
- Travel and safety: records about places and events are not travel or safety advice. Check current conditions with the relevant authorities and local guides before you travel.
4. Tourism listings
Our cultural tourism listings are for information only. We do not take bookings or payments, and we are not a party to any arrangement you make with a provider. Check details, prices and safety with the provider directly. Our Terms of Use say more.
5. Translations
Many records include words, names, proverbs, songs and stories in Uganda's languages, with an English translation or explanation. A translation is a guide to meaning. It cannot always carry the full sense, tone or cultural weight of the original, and the original language should be taken as the authority.
6. External links
We link to other websites and show maps and videos from other services. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content, accuracy or availability.
7. Telling us about errors
If you find something that is wrong, missing or out of date, please suggest a correction. You can do this on any page, and it helps everyone. If something should not be on the site at all, for example because it names you without your consent or shares restricted knowledge, use Request removal. We acknowledge removal requests within 48 hours and decide them within 7 days.
For anything else, email us at [email protected] or use our contact form. Our standards explain how we research, check and correct our records.
