This summary helps you find your way. The full text below is what applies.
1. About this policy
This policy explains who owns the material on Uganda Culture, which licences apply to it and how you may reuse it. Uganda Culture is run by Uganda Culture, Uganda. Copyright in Uganda is governed by the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, 2006, and this policy is read with that law and our Terms of Use.
2. What the licences cover
Every record on the site carries a licence. The licence covers our writing and the media we publish: the words we wrote, and each photo, audio recording and video. It does not cover the cultures themselves. The knowledge, names, practices, stories and designs that a record describes belong to their communities, not to us and not to you.
3. Our text
Text written by Uganda Culture is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). This means you may copy, share and adapt it, including for commercial purposes, as long as you:
- give credit to Uganda Culture and link to the record you used;
- say whether you made changes;
- share your adapted version under the same licence, CC BY-SA 4.0;
- do not add terms or technical measures that stop others from doing what the licence allows.
How to credit our text
Give the title of the record, Uganda Culture as the source, a link to the page and the licence. For example:
"Royal drums of Buganda" by Uganda Culture, ugandaculture.com, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Adapted and shortened.
If a record credits a named writer or the people who shared it, please include their names as shown on the record. Online, link the title to the page and the licence name to the licence. In print, give the web address in full. If you translate our text, say so in the credit and share the translation under CC BY-SA 4.0.
4. Photos, audio and video
Each photo, audio and video item shows its own licence and credit. The licence is chosen with the owner of the item, so it may differ from the licence of the text around it. Some items are under an open licence such as CC BY-SA 4.0 or CC BY 4.0. Others are all rights reserved, which means you may not reuse them without the owner's permission.
Always check the licence shown with the item before you reuse it, and credit the owner exactly as shown. For an openly licensed photo, a credit might read: Photo by the owner named on the record, via Uganda Culture, licensed under the licence shown. Use the owner's name and the licence exactly as they appear with the item.
Embedded videos from YouTube or Vimeo are covered by the terms of those services and by their owners' rights, not by our licence.
5. What is not licensed
The following are not covered by CC BY-SA or any other open licence on the site:
- the Uganda Culture name and logo;
- logos, emblems and marks of kingdoms, cultural institutions, organisations and businesses shown on the site;
- cultural knowledge itself, including names, totems, practices, designs and stories, which belong to their communities;
- restricted cultural knowledge, which we never publish and which no licence could make free to use;
- any item marked all rights reserved.
Reusing our text under its licence does not give you any right to present a community's knowledge as your own, to register it as a trade mark, or to use it in a way the community has asked people not to.
6. Reuse by communities, schools and researchers
We want our work to be used. Communities may use records about their own culture freely, including in their own languages. Teachers and schools may print, copy and adapt our text for lessons. Researchers may quote and build on our records, with credit.
When you reuse material about a culture, please do so with respect. Cite the sources listed on the record, credit the people who shared the knowledge and keep the context. If you plan to use material in a way that touches on sensitive matters, we encourage you to speak with the community concerned first.
Material sent in by contributors
People who contribute to Uganda Culture keep their copyright and give us a licence to publish their material under the licence shown on the record. Our Contributor Agreement sets out those terms. If a contributor withdraws their material, we stop publishing it, but copies already shared under an open licence may continue to be used under that licence.
7. Asking permission
If you want to reuse something in a way the licence does not allow, for example a photo that is all rights reserved, or our logo, you need permission. For media, the credit shown with the item names the owner. Where we can, we will help you reach them. To ask us, please contact us or email us at [email protected]. Tell us what you want to use, where and how.
8. Reporting infringement
If you believe something on Uganda Culture infringes your copyright, or was published without the permission of its owner, please tell us through our removal request form or email us at [email protected]. Include a link to the page, a description of the work and of your rights in it, and your contact details.
We acknowledge requests within 48 hours and decide them within 7 days. When the request comes from the rights holder, we hide the material while we review it. The full process is set out in our Takedown and Correction Policy.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The date and a short note of each change appear with the policy. Licences already attached to a record are not withdrawn by a change to this policy.
Versions
We keep every version we have published. Earlier versions stay here for reference.
