In short
- We use only cookies the site needs, such as one that keeps members signed in.
- We use no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
- If we ever add analytics or preference cookies, a banner will ask you first.
- Maps and embedded videos load from other services, which have their own policies.
- You can block or delete cookies in your browser at any time.
This summary helps you find your way. The full text below is what applies.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files that a website saves in your browser. The site can read them again when you come back, so that it can remember something, such as that you are signed in. This policy explains the cookies Uganda Culture uses and how you can control them. Uganda Culture is run by Uganda Culture, based in Uganda.
Some cookies last only until you close your browser or until a set time passes. Others stay for longer, so that the site can remember something between visits. Cookies set by the website you are visiting are called first-party cookies. Cookies set by another organisation, for example through embedded content, are called third-party cookies. All the cookies listed in section 2 are set by Uganda Culture itself.
2. The cookies we use
We use only a small number of cookies, and only to make the site work:
- uc_member keeps a member signed in. It cannot be read by scripts on the page, and it lasts up to 24 hours.
- topbar_highlight_dismissed remembers that you closed the highlight in the top bar, so that it does not keep coming back. It lasts 30 days.
- sessionid and csrftoken are used only on our administration system, for staff. They keep staff signed in and protect forms from misuse.
The table below lists every cookie we set, what it does and how long it lasts. It is updated automatically when our cookies change.
| Cookie | What it does | How long | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|---|
| uc_member | Keeps a member signed in on this device. | Up to 24 hours, and ends after 60 minutes without activity | Members |
| topbar_highlight_dismissed | Remembers that you closed the highlight in the top bar. | 30 days | Everyone who closes it |
| sessionid | Keeps a staff member signed in to the admin. | Until the staff session ends | Staff only |
| csrftoken | Protects the admin's forms against forged requests. | One year | Staff only |
These cookies are needed for the features you use, so we do not ask for consent before setting them. You can still block or delete them, as section 5 explains, but some features, such as signing in, will then stop working.
3. What we do not use
We do not use analytics cookies, advertising cookies or cookies that track you across other websites. We do not show adverts, and we do not sell personal information.
4. Future cookies and your choice
We may one day add analytics cookies, to understand how the site is used, or preference cookies, to remember your choices. If we do, a banner will ask for your consent before any of these cookies are set. You will be able to change your choice at any time, and we will update the cookie table and this policy.
5. Controlling cookies
You can control cookies in your browser settings. Most browsers let you:
- see the cookies that are stored and delete them;
- block cookies from all websites or from particular websites;
- block cookies set by other websites;
- delete all cookies when you close the browser.
Look for "cookies" or "site data" in your browser's settings or help pages. If you block the uc_member cookie, you will not be able to sign in as a member, but you can still read the whole site.
6. Other services
Some pages load content directly from other organisations. These services act under their own cookie and privacy policies:
- Maps: when a page shows a map, such as the cultural map, your browser fetches map tiles from OpenStreetMap servers, which see your IP address.
- Embedded video: when you open a page with an embedded video, your browser contacts YouTube, through its privacy-enhanced mode at youtube-nocookie.com, or Vimeo. This happens only on pages that contain a video.
Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle personal information more generally.
7. Changes to this policy
We will update this policy and the cookie table whenever the cookies we use change. The date of the current version and a note of what changed are shown on this page.
8. Contact us
If you have a question about cookies, email us at [email protected] or use our contact form.
